RAHMAN DAHLAN PUKUL BUNG MOKTAR, SINDIR ZAHID HAMIDI?

(Shahbudindotcom 19/08/2020)

Lim Guan Eng Is Still A Hero To The Chinese…….

    Dennis Ignatius

The DAP could hardly contain its elation when it announced on Saturday that in just one week Malaysians from all walks of life had contributed almost RM4 million to the solidary fund set up to help DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng (LGE) cover his bail expenses. The whopping response by ordinary Malaysians, at a time of economic hardship no less, says a lot about the mood of the public these days.

In the first place, it is a sure sign that public faith in the integrity and credibility of government institutions has hit rock bottom. Coming after the sweetheart deal involving Riza Aziz and the withdrawal of charges against former Sabah chief minister Musa Aman, the corruption charges against LGE were viewed with nothing but scepticism and contempt.

And when you add to the mix the plotting that brought down the Warisan government in Sabah and attempts now underway to challenge the legality of the royal pardon that Anwar received in 2018, it is not a difficult leap to conclude that a conspiracy is afoot to castrate the opposition and keep it from challenging an already shaky government.

If MCA and Gerakan were hoping for some political dividend from the corruption charges against LGE, they would, no doubt, be greatly disappointed. They tried to make an issue of the donation drive – by questioning why the DAP was appealing for public donations to help pay for LGE’s bail when the DAP secretary-general and his wife were more than capable of paying for it themselves – but it fell flat.

LGE is, of course, no pauper but the fund-raising exercise was never really about the money; it was a shrewd political move to harness public outrage over the charges, an invitation to the public to express with their cheque books their disdain for the government’s actions. And clearly, Malaysians rose to the occasion in splendid form, delivering a stunning RM4 million rebuke to the government.

PN parties can fulminate all they want about the DAP’s tactics but there’s no escaping the fact that UMNO, MCA or Gerakan can never dream of raising such support from the public themselves. Many voters would rather swallow whatever coin they have than give it to PN parties.

Certainly, when UMNO stalwarts tried to raise money for former UMNO president Najib’s bail in 2018, the results were less than inspiring. Media reports indicated that about RM500,000 was raised and that too mostly from UMNO branches. Perhaps after seeing the glittering array of treasure that was taken from his home, people wisely concluded that Najib didn’t need any of their hard-earned money. No word yet on whether there were any donations from Najib’s many Saudi admirers or whether the MCA or the Gerakan themselves offered financial support to the man they were once so proud to follow.

In the end, the PN government might have done the opposition a huge favour by its clumsy attempt to sideline LGE. All it did was to make voters angry enough with PN to rally to the DAP. As the party’s publicity secretary Tony Pua said with obvious glee, “The response [to the solidarity fund] has been incredible and exceeded all expectations… [it] has certainly reinvigorated all of us at DAP.”

The same thing happened when former prime minister Mahathir Mohamad brought trumped-up sodomy charges against Anwar Ibrahim in 1998. Malaysians, instinctively recognizing that an injustice was being perpetrated, flocked to Anwar’s banner by the hundreds of thousands. It gave birth to the reformasi movement which has had such a profound impact on Malaysian politics since.

It is a reminder that in politics, perception is everything. If people perceive something is not right, they will respond appropriately. For now at least, PN may have the power but it cannot claim to have the hearts of the people.

The DAP leadership, however, should not take the support of the people for granted especially when it comes to their blinkered love affair with Mahathir. Many voters have grown weary of Mahathir’s endless race-based political intrigues and schemes. They overwhelmingly hold him accountable for the collapse of the PH government and are in no mood to give him another chance.

Mahathir’s continuing obsession with race came through again when he launched his new party last week. Instead of talking about building a united and democratic nation, which is what is desperately needed, he talked about the struggle for Malay dignity and Malay rights.

From past experience, we know that when Malay politicians talk about fighting for Malay rights, they are invariably implying that the non-Malays have become too strong, too rich, too ungrateful or too whatever. This was the same narrative that Mahathir deployed at the Malay Dignity Congress to gather support for his plans to form a Malay unity government. No one wants to see a repeat performance.

If the DAP wants to continue to enjoy the support of the people it must not fall for Mahathir’s charms again. Voters would rather the DAP (and PKR) remain in opposition and continue to fight for a more inclusive and democratic nation than be in a government led by a man they no longer trust. If the DAP is so desperate to return to power that it is willing to blindly follow Mahathir once more, it might just have to look for rich Saudi donors the next time it needs support.

After ‘Worst Recession’ In Malaysia’s History, Strong Economic Recovery Expected In 2021, Fitch’s Research Unit Predicts…….

(MMO) – Malaysia economic recovery in the second half of this year is expected to be gradual before bouncing back on its feet next year, having experienced the its “worst recession” recently, the Fitch Group’s research unit said.

Fitch Solutions Country Risk and Industry Research was explaining why it had decided to revise its forecast of real GDP or economic growth for Malaysia at -4.5 per cent for 2020, down from the previous figures of -2.8 per cent. It also revised its 2021 forecast for Malaysia’s real GDP from the previous 5.7 per cent to a more positive 6.3 per cent.

Key reasons for the Fitch research unit’s revision of the 2020 figures include the 17.1 per cent contraction of Malaysia’s real GDP in the second quarter of 2020 or from April to June as compared to the year before due to movement control order (MCO) measures, which the unit described as the “worst contraction in Malaysia’s history”.

It also said the -4.5 per cent outlook for Malaysia’s real GDP is due to forecasted weaker domestic and external demand in the second half of 2020 in line with expected continued restrictions on travel and movement.

Touching on the expected greater contraction in private spending by 2.0 per cent instead of the forecasted contraction of 0.8 per cent previously, the Fitch unit said in its report on its outlook for Malaysia: “The severe downturn in Q220 as well as continuing restrictions on gatherings and people’s movements will continue to weigh on private consumption as disposable incomes shrink and malls and entertainment venues see less traffic.

“Furthermore, travel restrictions are likely to remain largely in place, as negotiations to re-open travel are likely to be limited to essential business travel in 2020, with governments in Asia mostly taking a cautious approach towards the matter.

“Malaysia will therefore be still unable to count on a return of tourism to aid the recovery, and this is a severe limiting factor, since tourism is a key part of the economy, accounting for 11.5 per cent of GDP (in both direct and indirect impact) in 2019,” it said.

Domestically, the research unit predicts slower recovery for gross fixed capital formation or investments as local businesses will remain cash strapped throughout this year due to cash flow issues, while noting that government consumption is unlikely to pick up the slack in domestic demand due to fiscal constraints and a relatively modest spending package announced in March.

Malaysia’s economic recovery for the second half of this year is also expected to be slower, due to the expected weaker economic recovery in its key trading partners, the Fitch unit said.

But the Fitch Solutions Country Risk and Industry Research also expected economic activity in Malaysia to pick up again over the second half of 2020, in line with the relaxing of MCO measures that are expected to be further eased over the coming months.

“Similar to other Asian economies such as Singapore, we believe that the worst has passed for Malaysia in terms of the recession and in the absence of a second wave of Covid-19 infections, a recovery, albeit slow and fragile, is set to commence in H220,” the research unit said in the same August 14 report, referring to the second half of 2020.

And for 2021, Malaysia is expected to record strong recovery in economic growth with the expected lifting of more restrictions on domestic movement and international travel.

“The easing of restrictions would pave the way for a private consumption led recovery in 2021, which we expect to contribute the lions share at 5.4pp out of the 6.3% growth we are forecasting.

“Furthermore, a more synchronised global recovery in 2021 will help to spur external demand, and boost exports,” it said, while also predicting that there may be faster growth in imports as compared to exports due to “exuberance in private consumption”.

“2021 is also likely to see investment return to growth as well, as domestic businesses gear up for the recovery beyond 2021 alongside a return of FDI as the region continues to undergo a re-configuration of supply chains,” it added, referring to foreign direct investment by its initials.

But the research unit noted that a new wave of Covid-19 cases could hurt the outlook for Malaysia, saying: “The emergence of a second wave of infections, both in Malaysia, and in a number of major economies around the world such as China and the US (which is already grappling with an aggressive second wave), remain the key downside risk to our 2020 and 2021 forecasts.”

How Does Mahathir Propose To Cut The RM100 Billion A Year Cost?……..

If Pakatan Harapan takes over, again, what would Mahathir do to solve this problem and reduce the 1.6 million civil service and RM100 billion a year cost to, say, just 1-million strong and RM60 billion a year cost?

(FMT) – Dr Mahathir Mohamad today asked MPs to reject any bill seeking additional funds for the government’s expenditure, saying these would only be used to support a bloated administration.

Mahathir was debating on the Supply (Reallocation of Appropriated Expenditure) Bill 2020, which is being read for the second time at the Dewan Rakyat.

The Langkawi MP said Malaysia was facing the Covid-19 pandemic and the government’s revenue had dropped as companies’ profits were lower.

He said the Perikatan Nasional government should work to reduce the deficit which he claimed the bill would inflate.

He said the government should also spend less when it has less revenue, adding that it should not have additional ministerial positions such as the special functions minister and representative to the Middle East. (READ MORE HERE)

    *********************************************************************

Okay, that is the keyword: BLOATED ADMINISTRATION.

Indonesia’s population is 268 million and it has a civil service of 4.6 million, 500,000 of that in the police and military. That comes to 2% of the population.

Malaysia, on the other hand, has a civil service of 1.6 million in a population of 32 million. That comes to 5% of the population, or 2.5 times the size of Indonesia’s civil service in terms of per capita.

So, what Mahathir said is correct. Malaysia’s civil service is bloated. And the cost to pay the salaries, allowances, pensions, etc., comes to RM100 billion a year — which naturally increases every year (unless the government retrenches or sacks about 600,000 or so of the civil service).

Okay, Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin and the Perikatan Nasional government has been in charge for just a few months since 1st March 2020. And they inherited this bloated administration. They did not create the problem. The problem developed over the past 63 years since Merdeka.

In the early years, out of every RM10 the government spent, RM1 went to cost and RM9 to development. Today, out of every RM10 the government spends, RM9 goes to cost and RM1 to development. This is what the Malays call mahal tali dari lembu.

What Mahathir says is true: it costs too much to run Malaysia. So, what is Mahathir proposing? How does the government reduce the cost? Does the government retrench 600,000 of the civil service?

First of all, maybe Muhyiddin can abolish the Cabinet, which appears to be what Mahathir is saying. Then each ministry or government department reports directly to Muhyiddin. The Secretary-General of each government agency can send their weekly reports to the Prime Minister.

Then ministries or departments can be merged to reduce staffing and overlapping functions. We do not need Youth, Sports, Culture, Tourism, etc. Can get rid of all that. Welfare, Health, Women’s Affairs, Family Planning, etc., can be one. Industries, Trade, Commodities, Natural Resources, Forest, Palm Oil, etc., can be one. Finance, Economy, and all financial related services can be one. Defence, Home Affairs, Foreign Affairs, etc., can be grouped under one. And so on.

This exercise would reduce the government ministries and departments to less than half what it currently is and the objective would be to abolish the cabinet and get rid of at least 600,000 civil servants and staff with an aim to reduce the RM100 billion a year cost for salaries, allowances and pensions.

Another heavy cost are the wakil rakyat. Currently, Malaysia has 222 members of parliament and 600 ADUNs (state assemblypersons) in the state assemblies. Maybe the state assemblies can be abolished and there would be no need for 600 ADUNs (like in the UK, which does not have state assemblies).

If we follow the UK Westminster system, then we will also not need MBs and Chief Ministers because we do not need to run the states — we just run the towns and cities through the local or city councils.

But why did Mahathir not do this when he was PM4 for 22 years or PM7 for 22 months? Mahathir could have reduced the size of the 1.6 million civil service and the RM100 billion a year cost before Muhyiddin Yassin and Perikatan Nasional took over on 1st March 2020.

This was never an issue before. Why is it an issue now? Is it because Pakatan Harapan is no longer in power? If Pakatan Harapan was still the government would it be an issue?

If Pakatan Harapan takes over, again, what would Mahathir do to solve this problem and reduce the 1.6 million civil service and RM100 billion a year cost to, say, just 1-million strong and RM60 billion a year cost?

Investigation Ongoing, Says IGP, As Bukit Aman Probes Sodomy 3…….

(feedly.com) – Bukit Aman has already recorded the statement of the commissioner of oaths in connection with the statutory declaration (SD) alleging that a prominent opposition politician committed sodomy, says Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Bador, adding that it is a waste of police resources.

“This matter is a waste of the police resources, and I am sick of such matters. However, a police report has been lodged, thus an investigation paper has been opened,” the IGP said.

The Inspector-General of Police said the Bukit Aman CID had already taken the statement of the commissioner of oath on the matter.

“We are also in the midst of recording the statement of the one who made the SD as well,” he told a press conference after an excellent awards ceremony in Bukit Aman on Tuesday (Aug 18).

Investigations were still ongoing, he added.

It was reported that Bukit Aman is investigating a statutory declaration (SD) that alleged a prominent Opposition politician committed sodomy.

Bukit Aman CID deputy director Deputy Comm Mior Faridalathrash Wahid confirmed that a police report had been lodged on the matter.

“We confirm that a report was lodged, and we are investigating the matter from all angles.

“We hope the public will refrain from speculating as the matter is under investigation,” he said when contacted on Tuesday.

It was learnt that the individual who made the SD lodged the report after the document was posted on an online blog recently.

Malaysiakini reported that the SD contained explicit details, which the man claimed he had sex with the politician four times in 2013 at different hotels in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Johor and Penang.

He also claimed that for each time, he was given RM300 cash.

The portal reported that the man also alleged that upon the request of the politician, he also introduced a friend to him. This friend was purportedly sodomised by the politician and paid the same amount.

The SD was dated June 29,2020.

The portal also reported that the man who made the SD confirmed a police report was lodged.

    PM9 Or Sodomy 3: Anwar’s Choice…….

Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and his loyal servant the IGP has Anwar over a barrel. PM9 or Sodomy 3? Yang mana satu nak? Pilih! This is almost like Hobson’s Choice — meaning you are not really being given a choice but a take-it-or-leave-it ultimatum.

The IGP, Abdul Hamid Bador, is angry that “police resources are being wasted” investigating Anwar Ibrahim’s latest alleged “Sodomy 3” crime.

Come on, Hamid! What “wasting police resources”? It’s not like the police are busy investigating the illegal gambling dens all over Malaysia that have been operating for the last 30 years and sometimes within walking distance of the police station.

Or are the police busy searching for the supposedly RM1.1 billion worth of cash and valuables seized from Najib Tun Razak’s condo at the Pavilion Residences which have gone missing? It seems only about RM500 million of the RM1.1 billion still remains. So where is the RM600 million more?

Actually, Hamid is not being honest. He is fed up not because this is the third sodomy case involving Anwar but because it is the 13th case. Yes, there are 13 files that the police have opened and that is why Hamid is pissed. And this came from Hamid’s own mouth.

Anyway, this “fed up that the police resources are being wasted” is an early warning shot to prepare Malaysians for the possibility that, in the end, the case will be dropped due to “lack of evidence”.

Anwar is being given a choice. Continue to push to become PM9 and the Sodomy 3 investigation will proceed. Drop the push to become PM9 and the Sodomy 3 investigation will also be dropped.
